Re: 2nd stage pushingFrom: DRDKG@aol.comFri Oct 27 12:01:50 1995
>From the point of view of evolution, it seems plausible that giving birth in the most physiologic way would result in the least trauma to mother and baby. If women are left to themselves and not coached to push a certain way, they tend to push intermittantly, for periods of about 5 seconds, only at the peak of contractions, and frequently with an open glottis. The second stage is longer, but the fetus is subjected to intense pushing for shorter periods, with a longer recovery period between them. The mother has more opportunity to breathe and re-oxygenate. I know of no studies supporting the practice of either "coached" or "natural" pushing, but teleologically, until something is shown to be better, wouldn't it seem reasonable to allow nature to take its course?

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
