evidence based medicineFrom: Charlie Chambers (cchamber@IC.Owatonna.MN.US)Tue Oct 24 08:19:05 1995
Experience is a wonderful tool that can lead us to a better understanding of disease processes. However, experience should lead us to investigation to confirm that our hypothesis is indeed true. Cope's treatise is an excellent reference, but we need evidence to show that appendicitis will not present with all his classic symptoms. If we rely on experience alone, how are we different from the local chiropracter who treats otitis with manipulations? Certainly, in his experience the association exists, but what evidence exists. Experience has lead us to the overwhelming use of episiotomy despite no evidence to support the benefits. Experience is vital to our profession but only when examined through the critical eye of research, and investigation.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
