The latest thing I have on AFP is the syllabus from a lecture I tended week before last, September 29, 1995, Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers Annual Conference Official Proceedings (pp 147-155) in Atlanta. The lecture was titled "The Mystery Continues: AFP Discrepancies" by: Debi F. Brightwell, RDMS, Senior Sonographer Bond Clinic, P.A. 500 Easet Central Avenue Winter Haven, FL 33880 The syllabus contains a graphic algorithm for following a high MSAFP. I'm sure she would be honored if you asked her for a copy of her paper. Or if you are in a hurry, send me a fax number and I'll fax the algorithym to you. Stats that Brightwell quote are: "Open neural tube defects are among the most common congenital anomalies occurring in the United States. The overall prevalence of these defects are 1 to 2 per 1,000 pregnancies in the U.S. and 5 to 7 per 1000 in Great Britian. The prevelance is higher in the eastern U.S. than the western U.S. and higher amoung Caucasians than Blacks. The risk increases by 5% when children are born in families with a child who has a neural tube defect adn 10% with two pervious children with defects." She also discusses TRIPLE SCREEN MARKERS IN MS-AFP SCREENING. Hope this helps, Peace, Terry

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
