unindicated sonogramsFrom: Robbrenner@aol.comSun Oct 1 13:16:59 1995
We also have the problem of patients asking when they are going to get their sonogram. We make an attempt to tell them that we only do these for indications but the patients persist on asking us to "find" an indication. When offerred the option of paying for the sonogram, they uniformly refuse. I feel very strongly that those of us who do office ultrasound should not do this free of charge. Adequate sonography requires time, skill, and liability and this should not be done free. Imagine having a plumber come out to fix your hot water heater and then asking him to fix your faucet without additional charge. Since managed care looks upon health care providers in the same light as plumbers or electricians, then we at least should have the same rights to charge. I have been trying to negotiate global fees for Obstetrics which would include all ultrasounds and NST's but have been unsuccessful. Robert Brenner MD Baltimore MD Robbrenner@aol.com

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
