was 8 babies, now abuse of health care dollarsFrom: Danae Steele (noheaecs@yahoo.com)Wed Jan 28 05:42:14 2009
I just returned from a 2 week CME trip at a very reputable teaching institution (to remain unnamed). I was appalled at the waste of health-care dollars. A fetus diagnosed with holoprosencephaly at 17 weeks who then went on to have an MRI? (I asked the doctors if they were unsure of their diagnosis and they said no, they were certain after the ultrasound.) A mom carrying a fetus with anencephaly who was then sent for a fetal echocardiogram? (this was ostensibly done because the mom was interested in donating the fetal heart for transplant, although everyone involved felt that it was highly unlikely that this would actually be possible.) A mom who's membranes ruptured at 12 weeks who had a painful and long amnioinfusion at 17 weeks to make U/S possible. I was truly horrified. These were just in the course of less than 2 weeks. No wonder we have a health-care crisis. Danae (MFM)

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
