.. AAMC endorses Physician Payments Sunshine Act The AAMC has endorsed the Senate-proposed, amended version of the "Physician Payments Sunshine Act." The legislation will require drug, device, or medical supply manufacturers that receive federal payments (through Medicare, Medicaid, or the State Children's Health Insurance Program) to disclose anything of value given to doctors, such as payments, gifts, honoraria, or travel. These companies would be required to submit information to the Department of Health and Human Services on a quarterly basis. The amended legislation proposed in the Senate eliminates the threshold used to determine which companies will be required to disclose gift information. It also lowers the minimum expense limit for mandatory reporting of gifts (from $25 and above to $15 and above). The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education.
