I am not a member of the Ina May fan club, at least not yet.? But I don't think there is anything fundamentally wrong with what she is doing.? I don't like the fear mongul part, but she is filling the need of a niche.? Her practice may not be appropriate in every community, but it sounds like for the people she serves she is giving them what they need.? I don't know about other parts of the US, but in Pennsylvania one does not even need a license to deliver babies at home.? I have taken care of patients who were brought into the hospital after complications from home births attended by lay midwives.? Those patients have very different mentalities then,?for lack of a better word,?"normal" people.? Having a baby in a hospital is very expensive.? Most Amish people don't have very much money.? And they don't seem to get too emotional about life or death.? I bet a lot of people would be envious of Ina May's practice.? After delivering one or two babies from those young and healthy mothers, the rest them probably just drop out.? She doesn't have to deal with insurance companies, hospital boards, or lawyers.? It's a win-win situation!

after reading about the amish, there is something to be pointed out. this gaskin person is running a "long con".

with her limited capabilities, she has found/added to/kept going a situation where she can do pretty much

whatever the hell she wants to do. and in return for enabling these medieval clodhoppers, she gets some

cultural cover. vnellsch

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
