Recently removed an IUD (Mirena) and path report indicated "inflamed mucus and decidualized endometrial tissue, with small fragment of Actinomyces species present"

My recollection is that no treatment is needed (in fact IUDs do not need to be removed in asymptomatic pts if incidentally found). Since pt has no symptoms, my feeling is to put in another IUD in one month - would anyone do otherwise?

Why did you remove the IUD? If it was because it was time for replacement, why bother sending it for pathology? And why not replacing it at the time of removal?

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
