There is also no evidence that amnioinfusion improves the outcome when thick mec is present, so it was an unnecessary procedure to begin with. Dr. John said yesterday in the RN privileges thread that it never ceases to amaze him how family practitioners consider oxytocin use to be a benign procedure (I personally don't know any who do, and yet you have at least one OB on your own board who thinks inducing EVERYONE at 39 weeks is a great idea--hmmm). What never ceases to amaze me is the number of OB's and L&D nurses who think inserting an IUPC is a benign procedure, and is indicated anytime you break a bag. I don't know if the IUPC caused the AFE in Ina May's case, and we may never know if that's a possibility, given how rare the complication is and how little we know about it, but if it is not necessary to stick tubes through a contaminated environment into the uterus (and it wasn't in that case), why do it? I'm just sayin'. Anna Meenan, MD

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
