Re: Vaccinating Boys for Girls' Sake? From: Joanne Bulley, MD (islesannie@gmail.com)Sun Feb 24 16:09:16 2008
Ah - but when we vaccinate for other STIs we don't vaccinate just half the population: Hepatitis B - (and we do not vaccinate just those we think might abuse IV drugs) - and we don't discuss HOW folks get the virus when we vaccinate: the FPs and Pediatricians say this ins the vaccine that is given at this time in our child's life. When I have talked with some moms who are protesting based on the sexual implications, I often ask if they had their kids get the Hep B vaccine. They mostly say yes and look at me weirdly. Then I ask them if they know how folks get Hep B and then I talk about risky sex and IV drugs and being in jail and that they probably hope that their child does not do those risky behaviors. But most likely their child will have sex someday. And even if they advise and hope that their child is a virgin when he or she picks a life partner - it is certainly less than 100% guaranteed and even if their daughter is - who knows about the other person. So it just makes sense to be vaccinated. Most ask a few other questions then decide to do it. It would be great to get the cost down ... but for now it is what it is. I have patients who plan to have the sons vaccinated. (those patients ar ofetn doctor's, doctor's spouses or lawyers) And just pay out of pocket. Joanne

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
