They have a plastic tip at the end that has wings of sort to help spread the tissue during placement. The laparoscope is able to pass into the trocar and you can see through the plastic end and see all the layers as they pass by during placement. I use these even for the secondary ports that I place under direct visualization. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit.
