Our hospital board and I'm sure most hospital boards are requesting that medical staff design a "dashboard" that gives an instaneous view of quality issues in the hospital that can be used to evaluate individual practitioners for quality of care in comparison to "national standards" and institutional standard of peers. The "numbers" will be abstracted out of the medical record by coders, but the criteria will be chosen by the medical staff, evaluated by the appropriate medical staff committees, included in credentialing files and forwarded to the Hospital board for review. Apparently it is something required by JCAHO. With the current emphasis on pay for performance from CMS, it is only a matter of time for all hospitals to incorparate this type of practice profiling. Are any of your hospital medical staffs using a similar type of evaluation for on-going credentialing? It is easy to decide on major criteria: serious morbidity, mortality, readmission rates, etc. What other indicators should be included? With Big Brother watching, we have to be careful about how easily we allow him to look over our shoulders and careful to provide information that is useful, meaningful and accurately reflects what we do and how well we do it.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education.
