Re: Gen: Answering ServiceFrom: Dr. John Provatopoulos B.Sc. M.D.C.M. F.R.S.C. (johnprov@sympatico.ca)Sun Jan 13 07:26:48 2008
I never got an answering service, and I am surprised how well it works. Basically our OB group has someone on call for hospital work i.e. deliveries or other assessments during labor, the patient's know they may not see the Dr. giving them their prenatal care if she/he is not on call, the person on call also takes care of gyn emergencies for the group and Ob/GYN consults from the e.r. . We never give the patient's our pager numbers, they know if they think they have a serious problem to go to the E.R. or D.R. and an on call doctor will be available, if they don't think its urgent they know to call their doctor for an appointment the next day. The government here has set up a 1-800 number for people to call for advice the idea being to keep them out of the E.R., I grant you it does provide some education to the public and gives jobs to the nurses answering the calls, but basically you can't do a proper history and physical over the phone.

Take care, John

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
