GYN: FDA Says A Hormone Is A HormoneFrom: art fougner, md (evsono@pipeline.com)Thu Jan 10 06:18:54 2008
Menopause hormones mixed by pharmacists aren’t any safer than commercially prepared hormones from drug companies, the Food and Drug Administration said today. The message is important because for the past few years, pharmacists, consumers, celebrities and even some doctors have been touting so-called bioidentical hormones as a safer alternative to standard hormones for treating menopause symptoms. Sitcom star Suzanne Somers, for example, has stirred controversy with two books claiming all sorts of health benefits from the custom-mixed drugs. But the F.D.A. announcement supports the notion that a hormone is a hormone. It doesn’t matter whether it’s mixed by a pharmacist or sold by a drug firm. The risks and benefits are the same. http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/01/09/a-hormone-is-a-hormone-fda-says/ A hormone is a hormone is a hormone. Art

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
