Love this list...info and discussion at a speed, and on a range of topics, and from a variety of contributors, our forebears would not believe possible. Midst all the gripes so many of us have so often about practicing medicine nowadays, its easy to lose sight of some of the things that make it better for us...such as this list. Hank "Atkinson, Samuel M, Jr" <ATKINSONS@ecu.edu> wrote: Agree that it is an excellent presentation as far as it goes. It is based on the predicate that if an Erb's or worse occurs, it is "res ipsa" has been invoked to assume that excessive force was exerted during the delivery, even if you did all of the maneuvers and appropriately annotated the chart. All of this came about as a result of the work of Allen and Gonik in 1987. Allen, an engineer, now on faculty at Hopkins, where a cottage industry has developed with Allen and Gurewitch have readily testified for Plaintiffs Attnys that any Erbs was proof of XS tugging on the infant. More recently, Gonik Walker and Grimm have published their proof/opinion that the uterus, and maternal pushing, can generate four times the force accept as the force that will cause damage. Thus, there is evidence based info thst supports that Erbs is not "iatrogenic ". Smart plaintiffs attorneys are already shying away from shoulder dystocia cases as "there's no money in it". Happily the dumb attorneys that do will lose!!! Happily, they'll also pay out of pocket money to Allen and Gurewitch. sAm : ob-gyn-l@obgyn.net on behalf of DoctorJoe@aol.com Sent: Thu 11/8/2007 2:09 PM To: Multiple recipients of list OB-GYN-L Subject: Re: shoulder dystocia on powerpoint In a message dated 11/8/2007 12:54:47 P.M. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
