Re: Gyn: When to stop the pillFrom: Joanne Bulley, MD (islesannie@gmail.com)Mon Oct 29 21:11:01 2007
Sounds like the ideal time for her to be "off" for 1-2 months and see if there are any spontaneous menses &/or vasomotor symptoms - maybe do an FSH. If she develops a new relationship, she needs condoms for reduction in risk of STDs anyway so they also take care of the contraceptive need. One question I have always wondered about - is how to tell with some level of certainty - when the person on OCP up to menopause can quit using any birth control. For those not on OCPs but using condoms and who are menstruating - I tell them condoms until 1 year of amenorrhea. I just would hate to have a patient have that immediate pre-menopause pregnancy! For someone who is on OCPs - do you take off pills for one week or month & get a high FSH then go back o OCPs and repeat one year later? Thanks for asking the question that made me ask more. Joanne

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
