I offer IUD's in the immediate post partum all the time. I usually tell mom to wait at least 4 weeks, but to come see me before she has intercourse the first time. Hatcher et al. and the WHO rate post partum IUD placement at >4 weeks as a risk category 1. I have no problem putting them in. I've only done about 500 IUDs, but I've not had a perforation (yet). One trick that I like to, hopefully avoid perforation is to release the IUD as soon as I leave the cervical canal, so I'm pushing the blunted T into the fundus and not the sharp pointy tip of the IUD with introducer. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education.
