Charlie I have been struggling with this for some time as well. After reading and consulting MFMs etc this is the best I can come up with: 1. do cultures of vagina when they present for GBS 2. Start antibiotic prophylaxis cochrane recommends Ampicillin IV q 6 and emycin po 3. Stop antibiotics if cultures are negative 4. continue of positive for GBS for 7 days and stop 5. Restart antibiotics if patient goes into labor no matter what 6. supposedly the antibiotics will prolong latency period and help the steroids to work. 7. also supposedly any antibiotic will work. MFMs in Toledo just give Ampiciillin 8. Literature clear about NOT giving Augmentin due to increased risk of NEC

I will be curious as to what input is from others. andy

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
