Re: Postpartum depressionFrom: ainsron (ainsron@sbcglobal.net)Thu Jun 7 12:50:00 2007
I went to a course on depression in pregnancy and postpartum at ACOG. The speaker, doubly boarded in Psych and OB/Gyn, said it didn't make a great deal of difference postpartum which SSRI or SNRI you use, choose one you are comfortable with, the risk of treatment is normally less than the risk of not treating. There are two issues, one is how much passes through the breast milk, i.e., protein binding and gastric degradation in the newborn, both result in significantly lower infant levels in the breast feeding newborn than in a fetus in utero. I usually use Prozac, Zoloft or Lexapro. Here's a link that provides a little more information: http://www.emorywomensprogram.org/articleDetail.asp?authID=200627255 <http://www.emorywomensprogram.org/articleDetail.asp?authID=200627255&Articl eIDF> &ArticleIDF Ronald E. I've used Zoloft in the past and wondered if there was anything new out there. Thanks, Glen

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
