As health care professionals why aren't we addressing what happened that turned these poor people into killers in the first place. Some really good literature about birth complications/ birth trauma and future criminality. Viriginia Apgar did her original study to determine what were the long term effects of routine obstetrical practices such as forceps, anesthesia and the like on the physical and mental health of the newborn. Her scoring has been used in a different way then she envisioned but there still needs to be some discussion about the effect our birth practices have on the mental health of our population. Just in case you think I'm whoo-whoo--well, I am. Louana

Hey, friendly spell checker. I'm still embarrassed over my issues with accept and EXcept;). Have to blame it on those darned international schools. Haha.

I've been amused at the 'elephant in the room' phenomenon occurring re: VT and gun control. Maybe we are all just sick of the whole thing. Heart sick.... and overloaded with the media barrage.

I know that I am probably not 'qualified' to hold this opinion, BUT... here I go again (God bless America;). If ONE sane person had been packing heat when that rat started killing the innocent... the story may be different. Yeah.. maybe more would be dead. Maybe not (the Utah Muslim rampage at the Mall is a good example of where a gun on a good guy came in rather handy). The guns are not the issue. The people are. Right?

I've been hesitant about hand guns for along time. After this latest episode.... my husband and I are purchasing them and learning how to use them effectively, should the need ever arise (as it did at VT). AND... should the political powers that be aspire to erode our rights to bear arms and defend our homes and families (candidates on bothe sides would support this measure). For safety or control???? I wonder.

Papua New Guinea and Belize have strict gun laws (aka: they are illegal(PNG) or highly difficult to obtain (Belize)). Simply put, only the really bad men who want to kill you have them. They are not afraid of killing you, so breaking a gun law ban is no biggy. I can tell you one thing.... when they are high on crack and rattling around against the bars on your windows... the machete next to your bed is.... well, let's just say LESS than comforting.

Thus far we seem to have skirted right round the Virginia Tech obscenity, and thus avoided any opinions on the state of the protection of citizens from non-existent gun laws. “Cultural equivalence”? Thank God it doesn’t exist in this part of the world.

I'd have to agree. A relatively dispassionate view of history would indicate that the US of A is the (so far) acme of civilization as we know it. Any argument for cultural equivalence is simply wrong, both evolutionarily and philosophically. However, those arguments are made daily, both implicitely and explicitely, by the media, by "intellectuals," and others.

Unfortunately, the media IS the message. So whatever the media extolls, the unwashed masses accept. (Not EXcept)

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
