Re: HRT and cervical cancerFrom: Joanne Bulley, MD (islesannie@gmail.com)Thu Apr 26 00:15:20 2007
The studies I read seemed to indicate that after the ANOVA (analysis of varsiance) the association was with the "usual suspects" of # of partners, aget at first coitus, # of partners the partners had and smoking. That once you factored out those then there as no association with OCPS (or OBCPs). with 100% ancedote (but supported by my local Gyn Onc consultant's recommendations for a shared patient) is that at least VAGINAL estrogen helps when the old dormant HPV is resurfacing and causing paps with CIN. I have several septogenerians and octogenerians who we have jointly (and not just me) with vaginal estrogen for their mild to moderate cervical dysplasia with concomitant +HR-HPV testing. Some of these women have had a few cones etc. Being on the vaginal estrogne - their paps normalize. After a few years I will repeat the HR-HPV test and see if it is still lurking. At Gyn Medical conferences we discuss this and the lecturer always agress with what is being done. So ... "unencumbered by data" to quote another lister ... I don't think there is an association between HT and an increase in CIN. We actually have the seniors who were part of the "early sexual revolution" (1960 - 1963) now on Medicare. So ... is it their HT ... or is it that they had a number of partners and smoked early in life .. or divorced and had yet another partner after reaching menopause? Joanne

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
