It's Category C in pregnancy and not recommended for nursing mothers. What you're dealing with is SPEED. It has the same effect as any adrenergic drug, given the dosage and chronicity. Chronic adrenergic agonism should (theoretically) lead to IUGR and fetal neurological developmental effects. It is a given that people on Adderall or Ritalin or other forms of amphetamine drugs will NOT like to get off of it, for the same reason Cocaine addicts don't want to quit. You feel much better (more powerful? more alive?) with the drug. I have to say that I think the Dx of ADHD, esp. in adults, is highly overblown and simply gives patients license to enjoy "speed" and all that means. Of course, it sounds like you're a little late in the story here, if they're near term. And I can guarantee you if you give them the choice of quit the speed or you can't breastfeed, they'll run out and buy formula. Joe P.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
