Jane: I published an article in Obstetrica and Gynecology, Vol 36(4) p. 510-514 .1970 entitled "The Universal Joint Syndrome" which contains a color picture of a Master's Window which is the etiology of the syndrome as described by Willard Allen And William Masters. The true description has nothing to do with endometriosis but rather a "Traumatic Laceration of the broad ligament due to an undue obstetrical event. I suppose infertility patients, subjected to a traumatic event such as HSG's, etc could also be traumatized and I suppose endometriosis can grow in a Masters' window but I do not believe true Masters Windows can be caused by endometriosisa per se. I still believe, as I concluded in 1970, that vaginal hysterectomy is the treatment of choice in such patients if childbearing is not an issue. For those doubting Thomases one should remmember the British Wit who commented, Hysterectomy is a simple operation. The less it is indicated, the simpler it is! But beware the xs vascularity in a true such patient. It is not always simple. The most recent patient I had was referred to me by a gastrtoenterologist. He had evaluated the patient with lower abd pain and obtained a CT scan. It revealed multiple dilated venous systems. An out patient vag hyst has resulted in a delighted and pain free mother of three whose husband is also delighted. If you wil send me your mail address, I will be happy to send you a reprint with the full page color print with it. Most people do not have bound Journals from 1970 as I do, nor several hundred reprints available. BTW, the cost of the color plate, in 1970 dollars was $ 1700.00, paid for by the Journal, not me. If your patient needs a third opinion, I'll be happy to se her at the Brody School of Medicine, still in Greenville however. Only the name of the Med School has changed since you interviewed with me some years ago! sAm atkinsons@ecu.edu

Subject: Allen-Masters syndrome

I had a new patient who walked in "to schedule a hysterectomy." She brings with her a paper from her former gyn in another location giving her a dx of Allen Masters syndrome.

If anyone is knowledgable about this diagnosis I would appreciate enlightenment.

Thanks,

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
