_Newer Contraceptives Double Risk of Fatal Blood Clots_ (http://www.forbes.com/forbeslife/health/feeds/hscout/2007/02/06/hscout601686.html) The Public Citizen's Health Research Group reported that "third generation" birth-control pills containing synthetic progestin have an increased risk of blood clots and do not prevent pregnancy any more effectively than older contraceptives. According to the group's director, the FDA has been aware of the risks since 1995. The group filed a petition with the FDA to ban these contraceptives. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education.
