DISCLAIMER: I am a clinical investigator and speaker for Merck.
Having said that, I'm a fan of the Gardasil vaccine for all of our
daughters (and sons as well, as soon as the evidence is there).
Despite that, I totally agree with the arguments that have been made
about vaccines and school attendance. The previously mandated
vaccines, including smallpox, MMR, and Varicella, were mandated
because of legitmate public health concerns about epidemic outbreaks
of these diseases in schools, and transmission through the school
population. There is NO valid public health reason to mandate
Gardasil as a condition of school attendance.
Unfortunately, IMHO, I think the actions of the governor of Texas are
doing a major disservice, deflecting the argument away from the value
of the vaccine.
