On this Forum, we have discussed various articles and pundits commentaries as they have come out regarding the use of estrogen &/or progestins for treatment of menopause. Especially since July 2002 and "THE WHI" (as if that was such a superbly desinged study that it is the end-all to making hormone therapy recommendations). Recently we had brief comments regarding the suggestion that because the Breast Cancer rate declined in the US for 2003, this was because of the WHI and the number of women who quit HT. Dan properly commented this was a case of "post hoc, ergo propter hoc" otherwise translated: The Post Hoc fallacy derives its name from the Latin phrase "Post hoc, ergo propter hoc." This has been traditionally interpreted as "After this, therefore because of this." This fallacy is committed when it is concluded that one event causes another simply because the proposed cause occurred before the proposed effect. More formally, the fallacy involves concluding that A causes or caused B because A occurs before B and there is not sufficient evidence to actually warrant such a claim. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education.
