Progesterone for prevention of preterm birth

Aloha folks!

Does anybody routinely use I.M. progesterone for reduction in risk of preterm birth since the 2003 NEJM article by Meis et. al. was published? ( N Engl J Med 2003; 348:2379-2385, Jun 12, 2003)

Also, is anyone aware of any data on the use of 8% progesterone intravaginally (U.S. brand name Prochieve) for this purpose?

I was asked this the other day and personally have not used it, as the rate of PTL in our population is much lower than the 54% seen in Meis' control group, so I don't think these data extrapolate across the board.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
