Re: 36 week culture questionFrom: ainsron (ainsron@sbcglobal.net)Wed Jan 10 07:43:33 2007
Cultures on the first visit are not routinely recommended by any authorities that I have read, other than for GC and Chlamydia. If you're a believer in the bacterial vaginosis causing preterm labor, you could possible justify it, but a wet mount is just as sensitive. Ronald E. Ainsworth, MD, FACOG -----Original Message----- From: ob-gyn-l@obgyn.net [mailto:ob-gyn-l@obgyn.net] On Behalf Of Babycatchers@aol.com Sent: Tuesday, January 09, 2007 6:25 PM To: Multiple recipients of list OB-GYN-L Subject: Re: 36 week culture question I remember after the demise delivery (OB did the delivery, I stayed thru labor and delivery for support- I had delivered her first baby the year before) we cultured both the placenta and the baby. The proteus could have been placenta. I will have to pull her chart and check tomorrow. So- the lab is giving us more info than we need on the cultures? I may have been misleading in saying perineal culture because it is vaginal/exterior rectum (not usually thru the sphincter). We have 2 OBs now and one does a vaginal culture as routine on first visit. The other (who is in the office I work in) does not do it. He says it was the way he was taught in Canada and not much other explanation. It was after he started these early cultures that we began getting all the extra information from the lab. They do the C&S on the positives for resistance. Thanks for the help and clarifications. Vicki Smith, CNM, MSN West Virginia Midwives- changing the world one baby at a time.
