Re: .5 million awarded to cesarean momFrom: ainsron (ainsron@sbcglobal.net)Thu Jan 4 15:43:46 2007
It comes from the ACOG handbook on Neonatal Encephalopathy and Cerebral Palsy. Talking about a review of cases of uterine rupture and perinatal mortality and morbidity, they state "No significant perinatal morbidity occurred in patients whose only fetal heart rate abnormality was prolonged deceleration when delivery occurred within 17 minutes of the onset of the prolonged deceleration." The article they reference is Leung, Leung & Paul; Uterine rupture after previous cesarean delivery; Am J Obstet Gynecol 1993; 169:945-50 (Level III). So if you believe you have 30 minutes from decision to incision to delivery a healthy fetus with a uterine rupture, think again. You have 17 minutes from the sentinel event, and it probably takes you at least 3-5 minutes to make the decision, leaving only 12-14 minutes to get the baby out. Ronald E. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
