First of all, a chest x-ray entails exposure of approximately 5 mrads and a significant exposure from a fetal standpoint is thought to be about 20 rads. Further, CT of the abdomen during the second and third trimester have been shown to be safe. The literature has been reporting on using spiral CT of the abdomen to assess the appendix in pregnant patients for about 4 years and I have used it several times for this indication.

For questions such as this, I like to reflect on a statement made some years ago by Norman Gant, who stated that at this gestational age, if this child were in the neonatal intensive care unit, he/she would have a stack of chest x-rays a foot high, but yet you are hesitant to do an indicated x-ray study when he/she is still in the womb. Think about it.

What is your opinion of someone 30 weeks gestation having a CT(head) and Chest X-ray to rule out infection during pregnancy?

Thank you,

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
