The issue being discussed is the appropriateness of ACOG making a statement which will be damaging to those who do feel comfortable supporting out of hospital births when no compelling evidence to support such a statement can be produced. One has to wonder what exactly prompted this statement at this time. It appears that it may have been politically, rather than purely medically, motivated. If this is the case perhaps a more honest and direct approach would be helpful so the underlying issues could be sorted out, discussed, and solved in a way that will best optimize choice and safety for American women. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education.
