progesterone and preterm labor

The big progesterone study had just a tiny (!) problem in that castor oil (which has been used by generations of midwives for inducing labor) was used as the "placebo". Kind of violates all the rules about what a placebo should be (an inert substance not known to have any effect on the outcome being studied.) Kind of makes you wonder whether the 50% PTL rate seen in the "placebo" patients was actually iatrogenic preterm labor. And yes, the progesterone-treated patients had the same rate of PTL that the authors predicted would be expected given that the patients were all at high risk of PTL.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
