The problem may be that the current sutdies are not really supporting the
benefit of use of 17 oh progesterone. Meis studies showed that when given
17-oh- P the risk of premature labor in the high risk women with a hx of
previous premature labor was about 36%. It was significantly less than the
placebo group getting IM castor oil shots. But it is about the same risk
tha we findll for women who do not get anything. ie 30% chance of having a
recurrence of premature delivery. what are we to conclude? andrew
Results Base-line characteristics of the 310 women in the progesterone group
and the 153 women in the placebo group were similar. Treatment with 17P
significantly reduced the risk of delivery at less than 37 weeks of
gestation (incidence, 36.3 percent in the progesterone group vs. 54.9
percent in the placebo group; relative risk, 0.66 [95 percent confidence
interval, 0.54 to 0.81]),
