Haven't seen the original paper - but seems not to be a very good study ..IMHO..

"The absence of a gold-standard for diagnosis is an unavoidable source of error in epidemiological studies of amniotic fluid embolism," he said. "As the researchers suggest, non-fatal amniotic fluid embolism might have been overdiagnosed in their study. Moreover, fatal cases of the disorder are less likely to be misdiagnosed."

"Although the absolute risk increase of AFE for women is very small (four or five total cases and one or two fatal cases per 100,000 women induced) and is unlikely to affect the decision to induce labour in the presence of compelling clinical indications, women and physicians should be aware of this risk if the decision is elective."

I have seen about 3 cases of AFE.. all dead except one.. last one (died) years ago doing a Repeat Elective C/S.. already in private practice..

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
