But in this case we do know that the abortions will continue, whether legal or not; making abortion illegal just kills more moms. In that sense, the college is correct in supporting legalization, as the avenue which has been shown to minimize mortality. It is logically consistent, if one wishes to "choose life" to oppose abortion and also to oppose criminalization of abortion. Prohibition has not been proven either safe or effective, although I understand the feel-good political appeal. (I don't know that _any_ method of eliminating abortion from society has been proven effective, but prohibition clearly doesn't work.)

There is a certain purity to making everything one thinks is wrong illegal, but I can't see doing that at the expense of life and health - and we know pretty well that there will be such an expense, and not tons of life saved, in this particular case. Utilitarian ethics as opposed to deontological, sure, but most legal systems do work that way.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
