Re: epidural and food

In the UK we fed women for as long as they wanted, epidural or no. Research shows that there is a higher rate of assisted delivery in starved women. In Canada where I am now most Docs stick to fluids in active labour, most midwives feed to womans need. Most women, not all, start to restrict themselves as labour gets more active, but I have had women eating between pushes! The only side effect has been that some women vomit at transition - but then they do that even on fluids alone. Never heard of any serious effects. If you starve women 8 hours before the epidural, they will be more likely to need one due to exhaustion and more likely to need instrumental delivery. I am astounded at how much power the anaesthetists have over here - I am sure the OB's called the shots more in the UK! Jane, RM

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
