I've let dads do vaginal deliveries, but I've never let a dad scrub in. But, you're right, I did let an Air Force cadet that had never seen an OR scrub in with me last week. Hmmm. Is there possibly some hospital rule on people that scrub in surgery?

#1 P1001 at 36 weeks Mild shoulder dystocia at term, baby and Mom fine.

Subequently, had missed ab, D and C, repeat D and C for suspected retained POC, perforation, etc. Mom is fine, and this was all elsewhere.

Mom wants/insists on C/S due to all of the above, and while I've advised that the chance of permanent injury is remote, well, she's having a C/S.

Here's the conversation:

GES: "During the C/S, your husband cannot cut the cord because this is a sterile operation."

Patient: "Really?"

Yes.

Can he scrub in?

No.

Why not?

GES, at a loss for words, if you can believe that: "Well, just because he's never done that before, has no training, and do you really want him doing that during your operation?"

Can you hold the baby up so he can cut it?

No.

C'mon Garry - let him scrub and do it. Bet you'd let a medical student, who didn't know their ass from their elbow, do it! Think of what a "hero" you'd be! ;+)

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
