Perhaps KT was not taught how to properly staples, squeezes as tightly as his powerful hand can squeeze causing necrosis and places them too far apart causing gaps, then has to put more in to close the gap, thus now too close and more reaction, and then leaves them in too long do cardiac cutters who have stripped the leg veins for cabbages and close with clips and leave them in for weeks. sAm atkinson,MD

Staples have only one advantage over subcuticular closure-speed. Otherwise, they are painful to remove (the patient feels each one), they leave gaps in the incision when removed, and they invariably produce uglier scars, including the "dotted lines" when left in situ for too long. Since the scar is the only visual indicator of teh quality of your surgery that the patient (and her friends and family) will ever see, it is clearly advangtageous for you to minimize the discomfort and maximize the appearance of her scar. It's well worth a few more minutes of your time and effort in the OR. KT

KT, do you have data unencumbered by emotion to support your statements regarding cosmesis? For example:"they invariably produce uglier scars"

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
