To me, it was explained as simply a way to make sure you placed your last (or first) stitch beyond the apex, so as not to leave a raw apex potentially bleeding when you closed everything up. Other than that, nothing exciting. If you can SEE the apex and grab it with forceps, you certainly don't need to tag it.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education.
