Just over 30 percent of pregnant women in South Africa are infected with the AIDS virus, according to a government report released Friday which estimated that 5.5 million South Africans are living with HIV.

The survey, conducted in October 2005 and released Friday by the Department of Health, said the figures showed little increase over 2004. It said this was a sign that the level of new infections was leveling out.

South Africa has the highest number of people living with the virus in the world, accounting for more than one eighth of the estimated 40.3 million cases.
