We have a patient whose husband contracted Dermatomyositis while stationed in Iraq. He has been on a course of methotexate and dapsine. They would like to have another child at some point in the future. I know one of the side effects of dapsine can be sterility, so it may take care of itself. The wife is worried what kind of problems would occur if she should get pregnant before the metrotrezate course is over. (He is on methotrate 15 mg q wk and they are telling him he will have to take it for life or take the chance of relapse.) The couple really want to have another child, but I am not sure what to advise them. She is one of our OB nurses, so I can't just refer the question. The literature talks about mothers and methotrexate, but not fathers. Any info would be appreciated.
