Re: Level 1 units and epiduralsFrom: Marie Harkins (mharkins@twcny.rr.com)Thu Jun 15 19:22:09 2006
Our local hospital recently moved from a Level 1 to a Level 2 status. We don't have anesthesia in house unless there is a VBAC laboring. Our anesthesia department has become more willing to do epidurals over the last 2 years. Prior to that we used mostly intrathecals for labor analgesia. There is a significant increase in patient demand for epidurals and they have responded to this. According to NY state codes, the L&D nurses can not adjust the dose of the labor epidurals. Nurses are allowed to adjust doses of post-op epidurals on all patients. This is a significant inconvenience for anesthesia who have to come in for any dosage adjustment.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
