Re: HPV VaccineFrom: LCLEMOS@aol.comFri Jun 9 10:05:05 2006
In a message dated 6/9/2006 10:59:08 A.M. Eastern Standard Time, goldman@calweb.com writes: Ok, here's my concern. It is a NEW vaccine. We have no long term data on it. We have no idea what long term side effects might be. It is for a disease that is 100% preventable though reasonably most people choose not to stay celibate for their entire life. I certainly would not consider vaccinating my 5 year old daughter. And why not consider vaccination for older women/men who are either not yet sexually active (yes there are still a few ) or those who have re-entered the partner game after a long term monogamous relationship? With meds in general I have found it is good to be leary of being the first unless the benefits so outweigh the potential risks as to make it a reasonable choice. Anyone remember Trovan? Just my two cents. Kim Those are certainly valid concerns and I love the suggestion of vaccinating the "love boat" set! (I had to GOOGLE Trovan, guess I wasn't in acute care through that, but I've seen other miracle drugs come and go.). Another challenge will be marketing worldwide in public health activity where more deaths from Cervical Cancer are occurring, paps and treatment aren't available, but women have little control over their sexual lives. The ethics of that decision will be an interesting process to watch. Laurie in ME

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
