Re: HPV VaccineFrom: Joanne Bulley, MD (islesannie@yahoo.com)Fri Jun 9 09:41:12 2006
It is interesting to watch the discussions - in public as well as on this list. Did you go ahead and let your kids be vacciinated for Hepatitis B? Even though you *hope* that your child will be well enough taught / trained by you to NOT do IV drugs or be in risky sexual and other behaviors? Why be more hesitant to have the child get the HPV vaccine than to vaccinate the kids for Hep B? Initially it was the teens that were given the Hep B and now parents are encouraged to vaccinate the newborn. As gyns - aren't we ALL seeing rampant HPV problems? (certainly more HPV than Hep B) Isn't reasonable to vaccinate everyone as the "social norm" inlcudes most women and men having more than 1 or 2 partners by the time they are 26? Average age of first coitus is before 18 for both males an females. The earlier the first sex - the more partners the person is likely to have. The statistical probability of college women to have had HPV is pretty high (I don't remember the numbers - but I bet TJ has them!) A dermatologist said to me over 15 years ago, "HPV [management] will put our kids through college" So if it is that much more likely that any of our kids and patients will get HPV than Hep B -- why hesitate to vaccinate - even if it is only for the 4 strains in this vaccine? The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
