I believe it has more to do with billing than CLIA.

I was under the impression that nurses couldn't do ferning at all because of the CLIA regulations. That is why our hospital's L&D staff now sends the slide to the lab to "officially" read it. The experienced nurses still use the microscope clandestinely, but for awhile it was completely removed until the docs revolted.

We are not at that point yet, I am still in evaluation. However, those of you who are sending ferns to lab can have the L&D nurses do the CLIA competency for fern rather than send it to the lab.
