Re: Fundal PressureFrom: D. Ashley Hill (dahmd@cfl.rr.com)Tue Feb 28 18:49:56 2006
Ronald: This would not fly at our hospital system. I attended a med-mal conference last year where a major malpractice lawyer specializing in brachial plexus injuries told us that he has a line of experts waiting to testify against you if you (or the RN) use fundal pressure during delivery, under any circumstances. These experts state that fundal pressure causes further impaction of the shoulder against the pubis, potentially stretching the brachial plexus. Further, he told us that most insurers settle immediately if the physician, midwife or RN uses fundal pressure. Our nursing staff will not perform fundal pressure, probably even if the doctor points a gun at them. Ashley

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
