Norplant

Hi, I need some advice from the group.

I have a patient who has had a Norplant in place for 6 years.  She wants to have it removed, but is uninsured.  I would do it, but I can't palpate the rods, and could not localize them with x-ray.  Doing a lit search (and calling Wyeth for advice) it seems that the way to remove these rods is under realtime US, or mammography, or a fluoroscope.  I don't have access to these options, and I can't find a surgeon in the area who is willing to do this (due to Norplant Foundation restrictions and preauthorization requirements).  I have obtained the records of the insertion, and it appears to have been uneventful.  Does anyone have any great ideas for getting these rods out in the office without ultrasound?  Would any of you try to remove them without realtime US, maybe in two different sessions?

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
