You certainly won't get any argument from me, Anna. I went to nursing school only so I could become a midwife, and then with great reluctance. My calling to the profession of midwifery and my sincere desire to be the best midwife I could be, not risk going to prison, and not risk losing my house gave me the necessary impetus to bite the proverbial bullet and go to nursing school so I could achieve my goal safely and legally.

Your points about the burdensome nature and questionable applicability of nursing education as a prerequisite to midwifery school are absolutely accurate. The most recent burden that nursing has decided to inflict upon "advanced practice nurses" such as midwives is the planned requirement of a "doctor of nursing practice" which is scheduled to be in effect by 2015. http://www.aacn.nche.edu/DNP/pdf/Essentials12-05.pdf Most U.S. midwifery educators are opposed to this requirement and many of us would prefer to see exactly the kind of program you propose.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
