Maily because it made no sense to me as to why it had to be a sterile speculum exam. I simply place the swab in the posterior fornix and rotate for 10 seconds. There is one study out of NYC or Yale from 2003 that looked at "blind fFn" and they found no problems. The sterile spec recommendation is because that was how the original studies were done to get FDA approval I believe.
