And we have had several whose mom tested beta strep neg. at 36 weeks, but at about 40 hours, the babies suddenly are symptomatic.

If GBS is neg at 36 weeks it can be pos at 37. We don't routinely test all women for GBS and don't have a problem. If a woman is tested and gives birth beofre the result is back and it's pos, we bring her and her baby back in.

Our community midwives are more than capable of refering women and/or their babies back to the hopsital for anything.

"the peds make them stay 48 hours"

You see this is the problem I have. Who can MAKE then do anything. They are adults in their own right and unless your hospital is a prison then no one can make anyone do anything they don't want to. Unless they're blackmailed with CPS...

What after care do they get in the community after they've been discharged?

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
